Are Irish Wolfhounds built for size “small”?

Ann | November 9th, 2009

“Small” is definitely not for the Irish wolfhound. Small spaces such as apartment living is not recommended for this breed as they are the biggest in the world with the Great Dane coming in second, with their big loving hearts equally proportional to their size. Without the proper area for exercise, this dog can be destructive as its energies get pent up.

Owners also wouldn’t want to be in close proximity when they “pass the gas” as they are known for their gassiness. It’s not a good idea to have small animals or pets around if they aren’t trained as for their aggression can take over and seriously injure other household companions. Small vehicles may pose a problem when going on family outings and the children demand that their canine best friend come along. In order to accept this gentle giant with totality one must not have a small heart nor a small amount of patience.

Avoid unnecessary vet bills! Do your dog’s basic health check!

Is the Irish Wolfhound one of the tallest dogs?

Ann | October 26th, 2009

There has been much debate as to which dog breed is the tallest of them all. Let us take a glance at the top few breeds. The Borzoi, a curvy and tall sight hound that is also called the Russian Wolfhound, it is a quick and agile wolf hunting breed during the period of the Tzars, they stand at 26 to 28 inches. Next is the Anatolian Shepherd. A rare dog bred for flock protection from wolves and bears. These dogs are not for inexperienced owners and grow up to 20 to 30 inches.

The “Apollo of Dogs”, the Great Dane is the gentle giant, and the model for the famous cartoon canine Scooby Doo. This dog stands at a staggering 28 to 32 inches. With these contenders, there is only one that reigns supreme and it is the Irish Wolfhound. An athletic dog with tireless endurance and devoted to its master, this champion stands 30 to 34 inches.

Irish Wolfhound Dog Training

Big Dog | March 12th, 2009

Dogs have become such an important part of our society, that the need for them to fit in well with other human beings and not pose a threat or a disturbance is critical to their long term acceptance by our neighbors and others around us. Not all people are dog lovers and to make sure that they’re not inconvenienced by our pets, training is essential.

Also, dog training is an integral part of a working dog’s life for them to be able to assist humans in activities like hunting and police work. Training dogs is a specialized skill since the key difficulty lies in how to communicate efficiently with them.

All training of dogs is a repetition of the basic principle of reward and punishment in various forms and combinations. Communication of these signals is the key to proper training. One very important thing to remember is consistency of signals. The reliability of the training depends on how well a dog is able to be sure of what your signals mean.

It must also be mentioned that different dog breeds take to training differently. Dogs like the iconic German Shepherd are very easily trained due to their high intelligence. Another important factor is the emotional state of the dog. A dog that is frightened, anxious, or insecure doesn’t train well and this reflects the importance of factors like proper socialization of puppies.

A lot of studies have shown that proper puppy socialization goes a long way towards ensuring a good temperament and receptivity towards training. Lots of handling, petting and generally being around humans in their everyday life goes a long way towards making a dog well behaved and easy to train.

Training Irish Wolfhound puppies should not begin too early however, as there is evidence to show that before a certain age, the brains of puppies are not significantly developed enough to process complex learning.

Professional dog trainers are best when it comes to training your Irish Wolfhound as they will ensure that the proper habits are set for life, including how to behave around strangers. For the safety of your Irish Wolfhound, it is your duty as an owner to ensure that he or she is well trained.

Poem for an Irish WolfHound

D Dog Fan | April 7th, 2008

The Irish Wolfhound

A furry face looked up at me
With eyes that stole my heart.
That lovely Irish Wolfhound
Has charmed me from the start.

So noble and reliable,
Intelligent and true,
Always there to listen,
And to turn my gray skies blue.

With a heart of purest gold,
Devoted to the end,
I can’t imagine life without
My Wolfhound–my best friend.

- Irish Wolfhounds really live up to their names. These huge dogs were used by the Celts, for hunting wolves.

- They were in Ireland by 500 BC and were sent to Rome by 393 BC, where they were viewed by the Romans in the arena.

- Novelist, Sir Walter Scott owned one and it was believed to have been six feet long, from head to tail.

- They would have become extinct by now, had it not been for people like George A. Graham, who gathered many of the remaining Wolfhounds in 1862 and began breeding them.
