Our family has been researching dog breeds in prep of getting a puppy. This (irish wolfhound) was a highly reccomended breed for our lifestyle. The more I read, the more excited we are......however, we're having a hard time finding any breeders? Anyone have any advice? We are located in Canada. Cheers!!!

I actually had a dog that looked exactly like this that came from a miniature poodle mother - for years i had wondered what the father was. This looks exactly like my old dog except it was about 2/3rds the size of an irish wolfhound and the fur was a little bit curly.
Do I call that a miniature Irish wolfhound?

Yes, pure white is recognized by the AKC. Along with gray, brindle, red, black, fawn or any other color that appears in the Deerhound.

This is a standard color! In fact, I had an all white (more of an off-white) with only gray ears! This dog was by far the best dog, I have and probably will, ever own! He was so gentile! I would recommend this dog to ANYONE with a family! The only downside, is the short lifespan. Mine only lived to be 6 years old. Great protector dog, without the aggression! One look and people were terrified!

Hi! I want to say thanks for an interesting site about a subject I have had an interest in for a long time now. I have been lurking and reading the posts avidly so just wanted to express my thanks for providing me with some very good reading material. I look forward to more, and taking a more active part in the discussions here.

Great Blog! The Irish Wolfhound is truly a lovely breed of dog and your blog has covered every aspect of this wonderful breed right down to its "gassiness".

I mention this aspect because in school I had a friend who had the most adorable female Wolfhound. One day we were all watching A James Bond movie when she let one off.

For a while we all ignored the odor until another silent nosebomb exploded. Then we started pointing fingers at each other until someone noticed that the Irish Wolfhound had this expression on her face that screamed guilty!

I swear if she could have blushed she would have!

And yes...you're dead on when you say that the Irish wolfhound is the tallest dog breed in the world, because most people mistakenly award that honour to the Great Dane.
