Are Irish Wolfhounds built for size “small”?

Ann | November 9th, 2009

“Small” is definitely not for the Irish wolfhound. Small spaces such as apartment living is not recommended for this breed as they are the biggest in the world with the Great Dane coming in second, with their big loving hearts equally proportional to their size. Without the proper area for exercise, this dog can be destructive as its energies get pent up.

Owners also wouldn’t want to be in close proximity when they “pass the gas” as they are known for their gassiness. It’s not a good idea to have small animals or pets around if they aren’t trained as for their aggression can take over and seriously injure other household companions. Small vehicles may pose a problem when going on family outings and the children demand that their canine best friend come along. In order to accept this gentle giant with totality one must not have a small heart nor a small amount of patience.

Avoid unnecessary vet bills! Do your dog’s basic health check!

  1. Great Blog! The Irish Wolfhound is truly a lovely breed of dog and your blog has covered every aspect of this wonderful breed right down to its “gassiness”.

I mention this aspect because in school I had a friend who had the most adorable female Wolfhound. One day we were all watching A James Bond movie when she let one off.

For a while we all ignored the odor until another silent nosebomb exploded. Then we started pointing fingers at each other until someone noticed that the Irish Wolfhound had this expression on her face that screamed guilty!

I swear if she could have blushed she would have!

And yes…you’re dead on when you say that the Irish wolfhound is the tallest dog breed in the world, because most people mistakenly award that honour to the Great Dane.
